“Never tell someone they can’t sing - it’s brutal, damaging and untrue.” Not my words, but when I read them, I was like YESSSSS!
I’ve been a vocal coach for nearly 20 years and I’ve helped hundreds of people mop up old beliefs systems around their voice and find true joy and freedom in singing.
But when I tell people what I do for a living they often ask me, ‘can anyone sing and I huff a bit because it’s a bit like saying ‘can anyone walk?’
My answer is always the same. You need 3 things:
1) A healthy functioning larynx.
2) A passion and desire to learn.
3) Some time to practice.
Here are some questions for your to ponder:
**Do you like the sound of your singing voice or are you embarrassed by it?
**Do you have a gut feeling that you could sing with the help and guidance of a singing teacher?
**Or do you feel that singing lessons are just for people who can already sing so you've never even given it a second thought?
Hold those thoughts…
Singing has always given me joy, except when I was competitive about it. I started singing as a child and was always pretty good at it, not exceptional but I could hold a tune. When the Spice Girls emerged on the scene was so taken with their brand of Girl Power that my soul become infected by it. Suddenly my life looked so dull compared to theirs and according to Spice Law, girls should be shaking things up. Now this came at a time when I was ready for change and as you do, in your early 20’s immersed in the frenzy of youth, I jacked in my beauty business and decided to embark on my ‘solo career’. So I learnt to write some songs with my very basic piano skills did my first live gig with the house band at West One Four in West Kensington. I thought it went really well and was eager to watch the video back to see how good I was. As I watched, the horror of the reality hit me. I was absolutely rubbish. It was clear that I wasn’t very good AT ALL. My performance had no dynamics and sounded childish, my voice sounded far too choral for rock music and I was completely out of tune. I was all ambition and no skill, all fire and no earth. I felt destroyed, useless and a fraud. But at that moment a seed was planted and that seed became the need to find out what my voice was capable of. That was my quest, my sole focus was to crack to code of my voice. Why was I going out of tune with a band in the background? Why was I losing power on the lower notes? Why did my voice lack interest?
As I began my vocal journey I discovered all these things and more, way more.
YES YOU CAN SING AND WHY YOU MUST!
The one single biggest thing that holds people back from experiencing their voice joyfully is self doubt.
MINSET TRICKS FOR OVERCOMING SELF DOUBT AROUND YOUR VOICE
There. So.... No, singing lessons are not just for the pros - I work with complete beginners who just want to figure out what their voices can do because like I said earlier, Life gave you a musical instrument, why not learn how to use it?
