I've been doing a lot of inner work around money and here's what I've learnt.
Money is simply energy because it is transferable and like energy is can neither be created or destroyed only transferred. You can give it and you can receive it. It comes in, it goes out. It flows from one place to another. It moves around. Often when we spend money, we receive energy. For example spending a little bit of extra money on a Taxi means we arrive at our hotel refreshed, cool and on time rather than stressed, sweaty and late should we decide to take the bus in a new country. Spending a little extra money money helps us invest in our energy if we spend it wisely. Interestingly, when you replace the word money with energy, you realise how strange your beliefs are. Here are some of the common blocks around money (try replacing the word money with energy and say them out loud):
The last point was a big one for me because I spent a lot of time with my grandparents who were devout Christians and big into self denial and living in poverty as a way of being virtuous. As a little girl I learnt that to be a good person meant it wasn’t cool to be rich. But after doing a bit of research and reading a lot of books around limiting beliefs, I’ve learned that the opposite is in fact true. When you have money, you can give back way more spectacularly, easily, creatively and generously than if you don’t. Check out Marie Forleo's business.
Make peace with all your conflicts around money. Your mind always believes what you tell it, so complaining about money, criticising people who have money and feeling bad about money is absolutely not good for you. And the reason it’s not good is because it creates cognitive dissonance (which feels bad). Cognitive Dissonance is created when you are believing something that’s not true. There IS an abundance of money , you CAN make money, you can do great things with money. We just have to learn to shift our mindset, our behaviours and take big risks to show Life that we mean business and to start attracting it into our reality.
When we tune into false believes around money this turns our inner light down because we’re declaring to Life that there’s just not enough to go around and of course, this isn’t true. In this case, we separate ourselves, we jump out of the vortex. When we turn our inner light down like this by criticising money, Life can’t see you and it can’t give you what your heart desires. You are literally invisible to Life. So, stop complaining about money.
Desperation repels and gratitude attracts. In the past, I’ve found myself desperate to get clients and the more desperate I’ve gotten the fewer enquires came through. Gratitude on the other hand attracts. Imagine that the big guy God is handing out cookies to children. There are two types of kids who receive these cookies. The kids who desperately want the cookies snatch them, scofff them and demand more and there are the kids of who eat the cookies slowly and appreciate every mouthful. Those kids then go up to God they say thank you, sincerely and creatively, and ask for another one. Which type of child do you think God will feel compelled to keep handing out cookies to? The grateful one! As Jen Sincero says, Wealth Appreciates for the Appreciative.
My biggest takeaways from the work I’ve done so far is that spending money, even scary amounts of money is never wasted if you are investing in something that’s gonna be good for you long term, if it’s gonna help you create healthy habits and an abundance mindset. DISCLAIMER: You have to resonate with the coach, therapist or teacher you’re intending to work with though, so take time to digest all their free material first and get a phone call with them.
I don’t think I’ve ever regretted an expensive purchase that has empowered me, given me life tools or helped me transform in one way shape or form.
As one of my favourite teachers Mike Dooley said, “of course you can afford it, you’re the fricking Universe!
